The Five Precepts of the Buddha in Building a Moral Society: A Review Jayanta Bayan, State-Aided College Teacher, Category-I, Department of Philosophy, Rampurhat College, Birbhum, West Bengal, India.
Buddha was primarily an ethical teacher and a social reformer. Buddha’s five precepts are most important in our practical life. The five moral precepts of buddha are known as panchasila. The word ‘sila’ means habit, character, behavior etc. Panchasila is the basic assumption of moral activities for both households as well as for renunciates. Abstaining from killing, abstaining from stealing, abstaining from sexual misconduct, abstaining from falsehood and abstaining from taking intoxicants- these five precepts of buddhism make a person disciplined, which is one of the most important ingredients for the development of overall personality of a person. Sila is the main driving force of human life. We can solve almost all problems by practicing the sila. A peaceful and beautiful society can be built if every person follows sila. A society or state in which peace will always prevail. So every person should follow Panchasila. As a result, family life will be happy as well as the path of the liberation will be widened. In this article, I have tried to show how it is possible to establish an ideal and moral society by practicing Buddha’s panchasila.
