In the early Vedic and post-Vedic period, women in particular were accorded due respect and importance. But the darkness of superstition, the influence of ignorance and the spread of caste-system started in the society after the post-Vedic period, and the unjust oppression of the lower classes and women-gender gradually increased in the society. Due to the dominance of Brahminism in the society, the lives of the lower-class people became junctures of suppression and points of oppression. Women in the society were represented by connotations like weak, irrational, subservient, discriminated, oppressed etc., From the modern era to the post-modern vis a via the present period, the improvement or attempt to improve the condition of women has been possible, only through the feminist movement. Now what gave rise to this feminist movement? We can see upsurge of feminist movement in different phases, by different groups and in different forms that aimed to end gender inequality in society. We come across four waves of feminist movement. These different waves helped to bring into focus the different agendas of the feminist issues into a spontaneous movement. Thus, deconstructing feminism as we know it, this article asserts that feminism is not necessarily an anti-male ideology. Rather, it is a doctrine against patriarchy, in which women and society are also implicit. The feminism movement is an attempt to establish both men and women as social and individual beings. Feminist epistemological practice is felt to be necessary. While keeping the scope of our discussion confined within epistemology, the feminist movement with a philosophical perspective is purpoted as an attempt to bring about social change. But why such was needed is discussed in detail with fervor of analyticity in this article. | |
