Rinku Das, Research Scholar, Department of Bengali, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India
Elements of both the modern novel and folk culture are taken from human society. So the relationship and conflict between these two is a matter of discussion. Various terms have been created for the word folklore. The use of folk culture in Bengali novels started with Bankimchandra, but the use of folk culture can be seen in the literature of Nalini Bera. The subject of folk culture is physical action, art, speech, practice, belief, ritual, history, ethnology, archeology, sociology, anthropology, linguistics, literature and art are involved. The folklore of the region Nalini Bera describes in her novel ‘Shabrcharit’ is the region along the banks of the ‘Subarnarekha’ river in the South-West border of Bengal, the confluence of Bengal-Bihar-Odisha known as ‘Jungalmahal’. Mixed culture is seen in this region. In this narrative, the novelist has used the folk elements of this region folk tales, rhymes, riddles, proverbs, folksongs, folk language, legends etc. as raw material in this novel.
