With the beginning of agriculture and settled life, the human society required new types of tools and implements. This need gave impetus to the emergence of various occupations and these new professions led to the rise of new groups of artisans. These new artisans contributed to the socio- economic growth and development of the country. A good number of crafts are supposed to have existed during the periods under survey. Ivory craft was one of them. This craft represented traditional characteristics in its line, form, style and execution. Thus ivory craft may be classified as industrial craft because the ultimate user of all kinds of products was the large section of the society. So mass production of these artifacts required organised labour, professionalism, creative instinct and proficiency. This study tries to focus the growth and development of the traditional ivory craft of India. Various ancient Indian texts are the main sources of information about this craft. These texts highlight the dedication, proficiency of the artisans. We also come across the socio- economic value of this beautiful ancient Indian craft. | |
