Greed of human and his so-called desire for development is the root cause of the
environmental crisis. The inevitable consequence of any traditional development process is
more or less environmental pollution. As the number of factories and infrastructures will
increase in the name of development, environmental pollution will also increase through
waste materials, more smoke, noxious gasses and industrial wastes. Along with increase the
use of natural resources, their inadequacy will gradually arise. So to protect our
environment should we stop the development process?
Since the late nineteenth century, the term development has been used in various fields
including natural sciences, sociology, physics, etc. However, in the field of social science,
this term development has been used in the 1950s to 1960s after the Second World War.
Since then this concept of development has started to be associated with many things like
economics, social progress etc. Which is assumed as ‘economic development’ or generally
‘development’, is an importation from Western culture. Many people think that the per
capita income of a country is the criteria of development.
In fact, equal opportunities for all people in the society are sought to be seen here as a
stage of development. Development means everyone having minimum education, right to
healthcare etc. Only when such a background of actual development is created, we can
expect human compassion towards the environment or towards other non-human beings.
The term 'sustainable development' often leads us to various plans and actions for the
development of natural resources and the environment. If it is possible to meet the goals of
sustainable development, we can expect to progress towards the primary goals of actual
human development and environmental protection. |
