Purulia is a very beautiful district of West Bengal – Rupasi Bengala. In general, the soil of Purulia is rough-dry and hard, but till the natural beauty of this district catches not only the eyes of the artists but of the common people also. Here in this district there are 13 Parbans (festivals) in 12 months; the life of the people here cannot be imagined without the festival. Among those Bhadu is a popular folk-festival of Purulia; according to the folkresearchers, this festival is about 800 years old. Through the observation of this festival, various hopes and aspirations of women’s life are expressed for the fulfilment. According to Bengali almanac, this festival starts from the first day of the month Bhadra in every year and ends on the last day of the same month. Village girls and women perform Bhadu Puja every evening with offering songs. The stories of Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas, along with the current social problems of women, are spread through the lyrics and music of these songs. Again, through these stories people’s education is spread. There are many opportunities also to use these songs in modern education too.
