Patriarchy: An Ideological Construct and the Limitations of Its Socio-Cultural Context Dr. Amitava Kanjilal, Head, Department of Political Science, Siliguri College, Siliguri, West Bengal, India |
From theoretical perspectives, Patriarchy has been designated as a mode of domination. As
a consequence the counter-currents to refute such a position have been much critical to the
various attributes of Patriarchy and have often portrayed it in a negative fashion.
Feminism, also, while criticising Patriarchy as aggressive, anti-equality, intolerant and
unjust fail to signify why, instead of being such degressive in nature, Patriarchy has
survived through generations, as human intellect has evolved through the age of reason and
modernity. Certainly then, Patriarchy is not a static or rigid idea and has surely gone
through reformation and rectifications with the changing face of time. If any political
proposition, like Feminism, misses to note such evolutionary dimensions within Patriarchy,
a serious gap emerges in the understanding of the basic premise of the feminist
theorization. The present paper is aimed at tracking genuine lacking in measuring the
shortfall of patriarchal notions and Patriarchy itself, for that matter and to highlight the
evolutionary dynamics within Patriarchy. |
