Upanishadic Thought in the Philosophy and Mind of Rabindra Sangeet
Arpita Roy Chowdhury, Postgraduate in Sanskrit, University of Burdwan, West Bengal, India
The Upanishads are the last part of all the Vedas; hence the Upanishads are called Vedanta. Moreover, the Upanishads discuss the feelings of the last stage of life, such as renunciation, dispassion, etc. so the Upanishads are also called Vedanta in that sense. Upanishads were deeply practiced in Rabindranath's house. Hence, the teachings of the Upanishads deeply scarred his life. The profound philosophy of the Upanishads echoed in every melody of Rabindranath's music. As Rabindranath claimed to be a poet on the one hand, on the other hand he was a worshiper of spirituality. Happiness is one of the means of enjoyment in life. It is in search of this joy that Upanishad says- “Ānandamēba yadbibhāti” He adopted Ananda Tattva from the theory of Upanishad and applied it in every aspect of life. Dive into that ocean of joy, the poet sang- “Aanondodhaara bohichhe bhubane”. Now, let us come to the spiritual thoughts of Rabindragan which were the innermost pursuits of the sages of the Upanishads. In Isopanishad the sage says that God resides everywhere in the world. And God resides in all beings. Nothing in the world is permanent. One has to enjoy through sacrifice. Don't covet someone else's money. The feeling of our poet Rabindranath is no less than this. An echo of this can be heard in Rabindranath's songs. “Aamar je sob dite hobe se to aami jaani, Aamar jato bitto, probhu, aamar jat o baani. Aamar chokher cheye dekha, aamar kaaner shona, Aamar haater nipun seba, aamar aanagona-Sab dite hobe” At the end of the discussion, I can say that Rabindranath's song is a symbol of life philosophy. This philosophy once ran through the veins of the sages. The influence of the feeling of that vision is mixed in Rabindranath's songs. But no matter where the philosophy of Rabindranath's music comes from, Rabindranath's music survives in its own originality. Rabindranath broke the traditional monotony in the world of music and made a new change in the life of music through Upanishad.
