Raja Rammohan Roy and Bengali Literature: Reassessment and Reconsideration
Dr. Jiban Krishna Patra,
Associate Professor, Department of Bengali, Bir Bikram Memorial College, Agartala, Tripura, India.
'Bharatpathik' Raja Rammohan Roy was the epitome of Bharatatma in the 19th century. His contribution to the social reform of Bengal and India is written in golden letters on the pages of history. He made a coordination between religion and action, East and West, Past and Present, and progressive and conservative. His role in the nineteenth-century Bengali literature was matchless. He carried out this literary process in many ways, and whether this process has become literary quality in a proper way or not, needs to be judged from the point of view of current literary criticism. Because, he started writing based on Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, English, and Bengali languages mainly for social reformation. His writing of about thirty books and several classical music (Brahmasangit) enriches Bengali prose language. This essay will address how relevant he was as a literary writer and how much he has contributed to Bengali literature.
Keywords: Bharatatma, social reform, coordination, literary pursuits, prose language.
