Women’s Autonomy and Rights in the Rigvedic Age Dr. Bratati Chakraborty, Assistant Professor, Turku Hansda Lapsa Hemram Mahavidyalay, Birbhum, West Bengal, India | |
In India, the issue of gender equality is currently being heard. In the
patriarchal society women have been oppressed for a long time. Women's rights
have been secured through the enactment of various laws. But the point to
consider is, since when has this oppression of women been going on? Has this
discrimination between men and women been there since the beginning of
civilization? If we look at our oldest literature, 'Vedic
literature', we get a proper idea about the matter. In the Rigveda Samhita, the
oldest part of the Vedas, it is seen that although the desire for a son found a
place in people's prayers during that era, a daughter was not undesirable. Furthermore, the Upanishads state that the Creator
created women according to His own will. Like men, women also had the right to
receive formal education through the Upanayana, otherwise they could not become
seers, sages or teachers. Along with the right to
education, economic rights are also enshrined in the Rigveda. The right of a
daughter to her father's property was a common practice at that time, which can
be understood through the mantras. Wives are presented as companions in the
family, not as slaves or subordinate. In that society child marriage is not
practiced and women also had the right to choose their life partner. In the present era, women are constantly fighting for all
the rights in life, for establishing their own independence, which were a
natural part of women's lives in the Rigvedic era. Later, during the Yajurvedic
era, and the Sutra literature, the respect and status of women gradually
decreased. The Rig Veda speaks of equality in the hymns. The evidence of
women's independence in the Rig Vedic period reveals the liberal and modern
mindset of the sages.
