SAARC and India (2014–2024): A Review and Assessment Erham Shaikh, Research Scholar, Department of International Relations, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, West Bengal, India
SAARC is a crucial tool for South Asian nations to collaborate and carry out a range of development decisions in the social, cultural, commercial, and economic spheres. The choices made by the South Asian nations regarding their development through this organization were crucial. Nevertheless, the choices made have come very close to failing. Terrorism, interference in domestic affairs, political systems within nations, and bilateral disputes between member states are the primary causes of this failure. Given the nature of SAARC's previous activities, it is evident that there have been some challenges to the organization's work. However, following the cross-border terrorist attack on the Uri army base in Indian Kashmir in 2016 by Pakistan and India, SAARC's efforts have been severely hindered. India and Pakistan's relationship has been tense ever since. The organization nearly fell apart as a result. As a result, the study aims to investigate and evaluate the elements of India-SAARC relations between 2014 and 2024. Additionally, an effort has been made to identify the causes of SAARC's post-2014 inactivity. It also examined and analyzed the success and failure of SAARC and explained why India, the organization's leader, has begun prioritizing BIMSTEC over SAARC since 2016.
