A Study of the Logos of Bengali Book Publishers and Printing Presses in Pre-Independence Bengal Jayanta Naskar, Asst. Professor, Department of Printmaking, Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, West Bengal, India
Several aspects have been observed
while providing a chronological representation of the logos used in Bengali
Books. How large a Publishing or Printing house is, the size of the logo for
official use should never be larger than 4 X 4 centimetres. A logo is a symbol
of an organization that serves as a mouthpiece and helps differentiate itself
from business competition. Gutenberg’s movable type brought a large number of
people under the umbrella of education in a short time. We must accept that
this is a novel and unique discovery of that time in the history of the world.
With the development of the printing industry, publishing house became
interested in using Logos, Signs and Symbols to distinguish themselves from
others. The logo used in the world’s first printing press, Gutenberg, was
printed in 1461 under the supervision of Johann Fust and Peter Schoffer.
Subsequently, publishing house from different countries around the world also
became interested in using the logo. In our Bengal we first saw the logo printed
in Bengali Books at the Serampore Mission Press under the supervision of
William Carey in 1800. After this, publishing and printing house spread one by
one in various areas of Bengal, and they are interested in using logos to
differentiate themselves from others. Here too, a logo is seen, meaning that
the publishing house was established not only in Kolkata but also outside
Kolkata. The Manashi Press, which began operating in Ramtanu Basu Lane in the
late 19th Century, has a very elegant and beautiful design on its
logo. Most of the publishing houses that have emerged since that early 20th
century have abandoned the decorative elements used in previous logos.
Simplicity has been brought to the logo by using only a special type of font.
