The study of history is a dynamic and ever-evolving process, continually reshaped by new inquiries and perspectives that deepen our understanding of the past. From the 1970s onward, the study of gender history gained significant prominence, with women’s history and culture emerging as important fields of research. Scholars increasingly explored how the social, cultural, and political constructions of masculinity and femininity influenced historical processes, thereby establishing gender as a vital category of historical analysis. In Bengali literature, a gender-oriented perspective began to take shape during the latter half of the twentieth century. Subsequently, in the twenty-first century, gender emerged as an even more significant theme in historical novels centered on the history of Bengal. This essay explores the representation of gender in selected historical novels based on Bengal’s past. | |
