Sanskrit and Prakrit Literature: Social Consciousness and Evaluation – An Analytical Study
Chhoton Mondal, Research Scholar, Department of Bengali, Kalyani University, West Bengal, India.
The flow of history is rich from era to era. The view of historical recovery changes. Comparative accomplished student, researcher and professor of linguistics (Dr.) Rameswar Shaw has endeavored to present its nature to the first inquisitive reader through a comparative discussion of ancient Indian literature with other foreign literatures in his timeless work ‘Sanskrit and Prakrit Literature: Social Consciousness and Evaluation’. Here, starting from the Vedic period, classical Sanskrit-Ramayana, Mahabharata, Puranas and its sub-genres, Kalidas, pre-Kalidas and post-Kalidas eras of audio and visual poetry, in the light of the genius of famous poets and dramatists, characteristics of literary works, social consciousness and human values. Reconstructed in unbiased perspective. Also the origin and development of Prakrit-Pali language and literature and its brief introduction history are described. This is the first attempt to make a history of the entire ancient Indian literature in the light of social consciousness, setting it in the background of social life, and to make a consistent evaluation of the main authors and creations. Dr. Rameswar Shah’s book is not only a continuous chronology of writers and works and merely providing information, determining the importance of the socio-economic environment in which literature is developed, a conscious effort to analyze the trends, popular tastes and language styles of the society at that time reflected in literature has added new dimensions and scope to the discussion of the history of literature.
