Suffering and the Path of Liberation in the Context of Sankhya Philosophy: A Discussion Sourav Majumdar, Ph.D. Research Scholar, Department of Philosophy, University of Burdwan, West Bengal, India.
In this article, I have tried to present novel ideas about the path of freedom from Suffering, and Sorrow in the context of Sāṃkhya Philosophy. All Indian Philosophies recognize the indispensability of the practice of philosophy to the needs of community life. The aim of philosophy is not merely the cessation of curiosity, but the attainment of Moksha in the form of a life, free of suffering and absolute Puruṣārtha. In philosophy, it is practiced to conquer the sorrows, misfortunes, diseases, sufferings, burdens, etc. of life. So all the Indian philosophies except Chārvāka have discussed the way out of communal sufferings. Sadly, though there are differences of opinion as to the means of getting rid of suffering, all are eager to achieve the goal of getting rid of suffering. Sadness has also been acknowledged in Sāṃkhya philosophy. According to Sāṃkhya, all things are composed of the three qualities of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. Because the quality is sorrowful, sorrow is latent in all things. So there is sorrow everywhwre and it is possible to get rid of it . In the first part of this article, after a brief discussion on Puruṣārtha, the nature of suffering will be known and a novel way of how to get rid of this suffering will be discussed in the context of Sāṃkhya Philosophy.
