Shakti Worship and Shakta Songs: The Socio-Historical Commitment of the Eighteenth Century
Arindam Adhikari,
Assistant Professor, Mankar College, Mankar, Purba Bardhaman, West Bengal, India.
The unstable political situation of the eighteenth century questioned the existence of human life. In the rules and oppression of East India Company, people started worshiping Shakti. The early Middle Ages of Bengali literature the power of God was vindictive. They collect their worship in forcefully from the people. In eighteenth century, times have changed. Over the time, people's ideas about God have changed. Bharatchandra has brought the new form of God in front of people in his poetry ‘Annada Mangal’. In that environment, some people adopted the goddess as form of mother or daughter or friend. Shakta Poet Ramprashad Sen adopted God Kali as her mother, in some time daughter or Supreme power of Universe. When people feel tired of his life, they want to take shelter of peace in the God Shakti as a child in his mother. Different land policies of foreign rulers in this century creat a class of new zamindars. They have no relation with the land. These zamindars and their related Naib-Gomstas started worshiping the Kali form of Adisakti and worshiping Shakti in their own domain. Thus the society of this century adopted Shakt Sadhana in a new form outside of Mangalkavya.
