Shanta Devi and Sita Devi, the two daughters of Ramananda Chattopadhyay, started a new
direction in literary world. They grew up in the liberal, progressive, cultured environment
of the Brahmo family. The varied life experiences of the highly educated Shanta Devi and
Sita Devi, depicted in their literature, have come from growing up in this cultural milieu.
Their writings include stories, novels, poems, memoirs, biographies, travelogues, translated
literature, juvenile literature etc. Struggle for self-establishment, efforts to earn a living,
joint participation of men and women in social service work, demand for individual
independence, freedom of association and exchange of ideas between men and women,
demand for equal power, right to choose a life partner, above all, the rearrangement of the
eternal relationship between men and women have emerged. Apart from father Ramananda,
mother Manorama Devi, vicinity of Rabindranath helped them to shape their mentality and
develop their literary career. Women's progressive thoughts are also acquired from them.

of enlightening the girls of the inner cities to overcome the obstacles and get enlightened in
