Education plays a pivotal role in overall development of our society. If the social beings are educated in true sense, then the society would emerge as an elegant, later dynamic and progressive. If the scenario is opposed, then the society is destined to undergo destruction. The present society that is contaminated by corruption, viciousness, valuelessness, demands a discretion regarding education. Most of us in today’s a world are highly educated, bagging various degrees. But the real education that make society beautiful and provide a backbone to the nation, is confined within the pages of books, it can’t be noticed in our daily life. Was this type of education and such backboneless educated society expected by us? Simplest answer to this question is ‘No’. We never desire of education that fails to enhance intellect that makes people self-centered, valueless and unethical. Our earliest literature reminds us of this fact. Upanishads, considered to be the essence of Vedas, contain many guidelines for creating an ideal society. The Upanishads appear to be about self-realization, but if we dig deep into their verses, we will find that they encourage a praiseworthy lifestyle. The suggestions that are prevalent in all verses of the Upanishads help in the upliftment of the society as a whole. The relationship and duties of ‘Guru’ and ‘Shishya’, the topic and pedagogy of the education system, all are demonstrated in Upanishads. It is our duty to follow the path shown by the Rishis to lead ourselves in assimilation of education and thus create a modern and well-educated society. Being modern does not necessarily mean to wave aside the age-old conventions, but to consume whatever good there is in those conventions and prosper. | |
