In the 19th century, the practice of child marriage was practiced with great enthusiasm. Education was accompanied by child marriage. They were in danger as they shouldered the responsibility of the family at a young age. Motherhood at a young age harmed girls’ health. It goes without saying that children born out of wedlock were in most cases weak sperm. Educated Bengali society started to become aware of the evils of early marriage like polygamy in the early nineteenth century. Especially the group of young people educated in western education did not like child marriage at all. The discussion on the harm of child marriage started in the meeting-committee. Newspapers of that time also started writing about this custom. The Cohabitation Consent Act comes in focus on the issue of child marriage. In this act intercourse with girls below 12 years of age is prohibited. At that time, some conservative people protested against this law on the grounds of religion.
