A Review of the Socio-Economic Condition of Tea Workers in the Dooars Region of North Bengal

West Bengal is one of the major tea producer state in India. The tea garden of North Bengal specially Jalpaiguri, Alipurdwar provides employment to more than one lakh workers. These tea workers are dependent upon the tea management for their food, education, water, education, health and sanitation. But due to closure of several tea garden of North Bengal the tea labourers lose their jobs and they shift from permanent labourer in the tea garden to casual labourer elsewhere. At present situation, the socio-economic condition of tea worker is not good. Most of the tea garden workers suffer from the hunger, poverty, various incurable diseases and expense their earning in drug addiction. On looking at this vulnerable situation, tea gardens have become the hunting grounds of traffickers. In this situation, tea workers require more income, more job securities and all economic development by government. On the other hand, the tea garden authorities have to ensure the proper implementation of the planter’s labour act in favour of these workers. In this paper, an attempt is made to examine the socio-economic condition of the tea workers in Dooars.
