Vyasa: An Endless Quest for the Self
Kailashpati Saha, Assistant Professor, Ramananda Centenary College, West Bengal, India
Shahzad Firdous is a renowned novelist to scholars. His revelation novel ‘Vyasa’ was first published in the ‘Parbantar’ in 1993. It creates a widespread stir among the readers immediately after its publication. He published around nineteen novels after that in various magazines. Not only in length, they also do not follow the traditional structural techniques of novel writing too. The significant characteristic of his novel is his narrative technique. The subject of his novels is never burdened by the plot construction, but rather it confronts the reader with the deeper truths of life. What is life? What is the purpose of life? What is the duty of man— the novel ‘Vyasa’ is rich in analysis of such philosophical understanding. The content of Shahzad’s novels is different from each other, but in each of his novels, he wanted to depict the true nature of the ultimate crisis of human civilization. He wants to state that the advancement of modern civilization, however scientifically and technologically developed is fundamentally misguided. Such a civilization does not make for a holistic development of man. It simply contributes in the formation of a painful saga of destitute people oppressed by a class of powerful people. Such a thought of Firdaus makes the reader face to face with reality. To surrender in the time of crisis is not the end of his stories and ‘Vyasa’ is not an exception to this. The character in his novel are strongly determined to make their life meaningful surpassing and surviving the meaninglessness of modern life. The novel ‘Vyasa’ is distinct not merely because of its subject but also because of its structure. The collective consciousness of people has a special diversion in this fictional narrative. He has gives a concrete shape to the human mechanism of thinking. Every character undergoes deep realization of the inner truth of life by exploring his own self. To understand life, to uncover life’s mystery, he stayed in contact with the grassroots people. In the novel ‘Vyasa’, the philosophy of life of simple people is seen on the path of self discovery. Apparently Vyasa is unconcerned, but profoundly connected by birth to the main narrative of the Mahabharata. Merged with themes of theist-atheist, consciousness-unconsciousness, grief and suffering this novel is a manifestation of Vyasa’s introspection.
