The Significance of Chitta, Chitta-vṛtti, and Chitta-bhūmi in Yoga Philosophy: A Survey Divya Chowdhury, Research Scholar, Department of Philosophy, The University of Burdwan, West Bengal, India
Yoga philosophy is a science of practice in the true sense. Since Samkhya and Yoga are equal systems of thought, the knowledge of Sankhya, which is just a name for power, can only be attained through the practice of yoga as directed by Maharishi Patanjali. To attain this power, the living entity has to control the mind, which is the sole goal of yoga. The scope of yoga is very deep, extensive and profound in knowledge and behavior. The science of yoga is a complete and comprehensive essence of the way of life itself. However, the power or influence of yoga, the nature of yoga, is not possible without the practice of yoga. It is impossible to fully control the body and mind in any other way except through the practice of yoga. Therefore, in yoga philosophy, it has been instructed to attain yoga siddhi, that is, liberation or salvation, through the control of the mind in order to attain self-realization. The importance of yoga in Indian philosophy has always been immense. The yoga-related limbs such as samadhi, yama, and niyama play a special role in the understanding of their respective philosophies, directly or indirectly, in almost every philosophical school.
