Musical Instruments in the Vedic Samhitas: Classification and Analytical Study in the Light of Indian Musicology Owalisha Roy, Research Scholar, Dept. of Sanskrit, Jadavpur University, Jadavpur, Kolkata, West Bengal, India
The Vedic Samhitas are the earliest cultural
foundations of Indian civilization, vividly showcasing the ancient existence of musical
instruments. The Ṛgveda, Sāmaveda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda
mention instruments such as Dundubhi, Bāṇa, Veṇu, Tūṇava, Karkarī, Āghāṭī etc. These
instruments were vital elements of yajnas, warfare, and social ceremonies,
extending well beyond ordinary entertainment. We find a structured fourfold
classification of musical instruments during the later phase of Sanskrit
musicology, notably in Bharata’s Nāṭyaśāstra and Śārṅgadeva’s Saṅgītaratnākara.
These are ‘Tata vādya’ or stringed instruments like Veena, ‘Avanaddha vādya’ or
percussion instruments covered with skin like Mridanga, ‘Ghana vādya’or solid
instruments played by striking like cymbals and ‘Suṣira vādya’ or wind
instruments like flute. Although a formal systematic grouping of these musical
instruments is absent within the Vedic Samhitas, based on their structural
design and sound-production characteristics, these musical instruments can be
broadly classified into these four categories. Such a classification highlights
the continuity between the Vedic musical tradition and later Indian musicology.
