Traditional Values of Vedic Philosophy in Addressing Contemporary Global Environmental Crisis
Abdul Alim Seikh, SACT, Department of Philosophy, Domkal College, West Bengal, India
The contemporary landscape of the twenty first century is entangled in a dialectical tension between development and ecological crisis. While the unprecedented technological advancements and mechanical progress of modern civilization have brought material prosperity, they have simultaneously engendered a profound rupture in the traditional spiritual bond between humanity and nature. In this context, the necessity to rethink the reciprocal relationship between humans and the natural world is being acutely felt. Concurrently, there is a growing call to rediscover the insights inherent in ancient wisdom traditions that once harmoniously integrated human life with nature.
This research article examines the Vedic concept of Rita as a counterpoint to the adverse consequences of modern consumerism and anthropocentric worldviews. It explores how the Panchamahabhuta, comprising earth, water, fire, air, and ether, were perceived by ancient sages not merely as inert matter but as the fundamental principles of life and sacred entities. Through a meaningful synthesis of ancient wisdom and modern science, the article underscores the significance of sustainable development, which holds the promise of a livable planet for future generations. Ultimately, it advocates a philosophy of life in which humans and nature are not separate entities but are bound together in an inseparable and sacred alliance.
